What is a

960 Woodshop?

A simple question with a longwinded answer, bear with us a moment.

With the recent global pandemic still in view, something that irreversibly changed the lives of so many, it changed our lives too. It left us asking ourselves what we were doing, REALLY doing, with our lives. It made us realize that the “right time” does not exist & we only have today, imperfect as it may be.

In 2021 we took a long awaited leap of faith by founding our small business borne of our big dreams. A couple of Sheridan College graduates with the simple goal of making & creating real things in a world which revolves around disposability. We started looking for a new home that included a workspace to keep our overhead low, not an easy feat in Ontario’s housing market at the time.

When finally faced with choosing a name for our woodshop, we wanted something that told a story of what we value & where we came from.

As it so happens, Kane’s grandfather owned & operated Webb Lumber in St. Marys Ontario, their phone number was 960.

But let us step back to 2013 for just a moment. That was when Kane & Melissa met while both enrolled in Sheridan College’s Craft & Design Furniture program.

Just a couple of years after graduating from Laurentian University’s Anthropology program, Melissa was accepted into Sheridan. This was the best place to learn about repairing & refinishing wood furniture, as her primary focus was on reducing waste & creating functional art.

Kane made his way to Sheridan following a brief stint at the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) because he was most interested in how art & design applied to building custom wood furniture.

As may be evident by now, this is how our combined passions lead to 960 Woodshop being a mixed bag of goods & services we are proud to offer. Our business is the culmination of our education in fine handcrafted furniture & design, Kane’s years of experience working in cabinetry & custom installations as well as Melissa’s lifelong thrifting obsession.

We hope you find something here that you love.
